Growing herbs in your garden has a special appeal, being both practical and enjoyable. Although herbs are valued primarily for the culinary, healing and cosmetic uses they also have the charm of wild flowers and evocative scents, so giving the herb garden its uniquely restful atmosphere. This site will guide you in growing your own herb garden - to plan and plant it, with information on growing herbs from seeds, cuttings, divisions and how and where to use herbs.

Young healthy herbs will grow and thrive, if they have been planted in well-prepared soil, water well for the first few weeks and they are not harvested until they are established and produce new growth. However, once established they should regularly be harvested, leaves and shoots, to encourage bushy and fresh growth. It is useful to keep some records, preferably written, of when you sow seeds, take cuttings and what pest have caused problems the year before to refer to in the subsequent years.

If your herb garden is an organic one you only have natural methods for keeping weeds and pests under control. The secret to a well-managed garden is to keep its ecosystem in balance and not to be fooled by nature as no two seasons are the same.

It is best to plant sufficient quantities of your favorite herbs so that the plants will not suffer from cutting to often and to hard. During hot and/or windy weather, make sure that plants receive sufficient water. Few herbs are heavy feeders but if harvested often and hard they may need some good organic matter.

Remove dead flowers and cut back sticky stems. In spring trim last year’s stems by at least 3cm to keep plants in a good shape but make sure that always some foliage remains. Remove any old woody parts twice a year to prolong the life of the plants. Pinch out regularly and remove flower buds and flowers to prevent self-seeding, promote new foliage and prolong plant life.
